State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Saturday received the body of a Bangladeshi migrant worker killed in a missile attack in Iraq and handed over financial assistance to the bereaved family.
The deceased, Mohammad Shrabon, a Bangladeshi expatriate worker, was killed in a missile strike in Baghdad recently.
The body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4:45am on a Turkish Airlines flight under the supervision of the Bangladesh Embassy in Baghdad.
A foreign ministry press release said Shama Obaed Islam received the body on behalf of the government with deep sorrow and respect. She also expressed condolences to the grieving family.
Shrabon, son of Mohammad Noli Mia of Bakultala village under Munshiganj Sadar Upazila, had been living and working in Baghdad for the past 10 years.
The body was transported from Baghdad International Airport on May 27 on Turkish Airlines Flight TK0843. It reached Dhaka after a transit in Türkiye.
After completion of airport formalities, authorities handed over the body to the deceased’s father, wife and daughter.
On the occasion, the state minister provided Tk35,000 for transportation and funeral expenses, along with a special grant of Tk50,000 and other financial assistance on behalf of the government.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board were present at the airport.
