BNP observed a seven-day mourning programme for its Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, following her death on 30 December.
The party’s central office in Nayapaltan and offices nationwide flew black flags, while leaders, activists, and supporters wore black badges in her memory.
Prayer programmes and Quran recitations were organised across party offices and other locations to pray for her soul. Condolence books were opened at the BNP central office, her Gulshan office in Dhaka, and at district offices for members of the public to pay respects.
The government had also declared three days of state mourning, which concluded last Friday. During this period, national flags were flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous and educational institutions, as well as at Bangladesh missions abroad. Special prayers were held in mosques and other religious institutions nationwide.
Khaleda Zia’s namaz-e-janaza took place on 31 December at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka after Zohr prayers. She was later laid to rest with full state honours beside her husband, Shaheed President and freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, in Zia Udyan, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
In the days following, BNP leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens continued to pay homage at her gravesite. Visitors placed wreaths and offered prayers, while others stood in silent reflection. The grave, adorned with flowers, became a focal point of tribute, drawing people from all walks of life and uniting them in remembrance.
Khaleda Zia, long regarded as a steadfast champion of democracy in Bangladesh, remains a symbol of political resolve and public devotion.
Khaleda Zia passed away while undergoing treatment at the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80.
