BNP activists allegedly attacked, vandalised, and looted the houses of National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders and supporters in Rangpur’s Haragach upazila on Friday.
Allegations have also surfaced that police officers who went to inspect the situation were assaulted.
Akhter Hossen, elected MP from Rangpur‑4 and NCP member secretary, claimed that BNP men became reckless immediately after the announcement that BNP would form the government. “You will be shocked to know that in Pautana, a BNP activist threatened to rape one of our women members,” he said.
He held a press conference at the 36 July Square in Rangpur city around 11:30pm on Friday.
Akhtar also brought allegations of attacks against defeated BNP candidate Emdadul Haque Bhorsa.
According to eyewitnesses and police, motorcycles were damaged. In Sarai Ambagan, BNP men attacked the home of NCP’s district organisational secretary MI Sumon, vandalised property, and looted gold and cash. In Maya Bazar, Haragach joint coordinator Rubayet was beaten, and his house was attacked and vandalised.
The house of Yasir Arafat, chief coordinator of Haragach Thana NCP, was also attacked at Mollatari. Local Jamaat activist Momin’s house was similarly targeted and looted.
When police rushed to Sarai Ambagan, their vehicle was also attacked.
Haragach Police Station’s officer‑in‑charge said that after receiving reports, they went to inspect the vandalised houses. But BNP activists attacked the police too. Later the law enforcers returned to the station, brought additional forces, and went back to the scene, he added.
“The situation is now calm. We have filed a general diary regarding the attack on police,” he said.
Criticizing the administration for not taking action, Akhtar said, “So far they have not deployed any force here. They have not rescued anyone. The people of Haragach are being held hostage… a mafia rule is operating here. No one dares to speak out.”
When contacted, Emdadul Haque denied the allegations. He said, “I did not permit anyone to vandalise or loot. People are reacting because they believe victory was snatched away from them. I have no involvement in this. Acting on instructions from the BNP high command, I have applied for a recount of votes.”
