A local BNP leader and his mother sustained bullet injuries when unidentified assailants attacked their home in Rangunia, Chattogram, on Sunday night.
The injured have been identified as Osman, 42, president of the Sarafbhata Union BNP, and his 70-year-old mother, Achiya Begum.
Police and family members said the incident occurred around 8pm in Ward No. 2 of Sarafbhata Union, at the residence of Gonjom Ali Sarkar.
Osman was shot in the hand and abdomen, while his mother was hit in both legs while trying to protect him. His father, Rashid Ahmed, was reportedly beaten during the assault.
Rashid Ahmed said, “Four armed men suddenly entered our house and opened fire. My son Osman was shot, and when my wife tried to save him, she was also shot.”
The injured were initially taken to Rangunia Upazila Health Complex. Due to the critical condition of his injuries, Osman was later transferred to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram city for advanced treatment, while his mother continues to receive care locally. A duty doctor confirmed Osman’s condition is critical.
Md. Hilal Uddin Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of South Rangunia Police Station, told Times of Bangladesh that preliminary investigations suggest the attack was carried out under the leadership of Kamal, a district-listed criminal. The motive behind the attack has not yet been determined.
“The police arrived promptly at the scene, and members of the army and RAB have been deployed in the area.
Operations are ongoing to apprehend the attackers and maintain law and order,” the officer added.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area after the incident.
