The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is busy selecting candidates for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections slated for February 2026.
The party will soon give “green signal” to single candidate for each constituency, BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed said while talking to journalists at his residence in Gulshan of the capital on Friday.
He also said BNP has long been demanding that Awami League be held accountable. However, he made it clear that BNP does not support banning any political party through executive orders.
“Any such action should be taken through a judicial process,” he emphasised.
Highlighting BNP’s democratic values, Salahuddin stated that the party has 10-12 qualified candidates in every constituency.
“We are finalising nominations through a systematic process. Soon, we will allow our selected single candidates to begin field-level preparations,” he said.
He also said the official announcements of the candidates would come only after the election schedule is declared.
About Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’ recent remarks, Salahuddin said it would have been better if Yunus had refrained from saying that the people want the current government for another five years.
“Unnecessary comments like this, unless absolutely essential, should be avoided, especially when they may lead to fresh crises in national life,” he added.
Regarding possible electoral alliances, the BNP leader informed that discussions are ongoing with various political parties.
“To protect democracy, political unity is essential. Thus, all anti-fascist parties must stand together,” he said.
Salahuddin alleged that Awami League has shown no remorse despite committing acts of mass violence.
“Instead, they are conspiring about the country. The government should file cases against Awami League in the ICT,” he concluded.
