BNP has crossed the threshold to form the next government, as ballots were counted in a pivotal vote that is expected to restore political stability in the troubled country.
The party had won 151 seats in the 300-member parliament, Jamuna TV showed, securing a simple majority.
BNP leaders are sounding very confident. Several have told the media that their party has crossed the majority mark, although official results have not confirmed that.
“Of course, BNP is winning, the majority of course, and even it would be a landslide victory, I guess. Winning two-thirds of the seats is called a landslide victory, I think we would cross the 200 seats limit,” Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, standing committe member of the BNP, told Reuters
Shafiqur Rahman, head of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, has made what sounds a lot like an early concession speech. He said his party would “not do politics of opposition for the sake of it” but rather would “do positive politics.”
