The government has canceled the appointment of AFM Shahinul Islam as the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) following allegations of financial irregularities and the circulation of a controversial video on social media.
The Financial Institutions Division under the Ministry of Finance issued an official notification on Tuesday. It stated that in accordance with Clause 7 of the agreement between the government and Shahinul Islam, his contract-based appointment has been immediately revoked.
A four-member investigation committee, formed at the request of Bangladesh Bank, analyzed Shahinul Islam’s 12 personal bank accounts but found no correlation between his income and expenses.
The report mentioned that Shahinul Islam failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the sources of his income.
Additionally, forensic analysis by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police confirmed that the video circulating on social media was not fabricated.
The report also noted that after the release of the controversial video, BFIU officials expressed discomfort in working with Shahinul Islam. As a result, the investigation committee recommended his dismissal from the position.
Shahinul Islam was appointed as the head of BFIU in January this year. However, within just eight months, he has been removed from his post due to financial misconduct and the video scandal.
