The government is undergoing advance plans to introduce a nationwide centralised e-ticketing and box office system across cinema halls.
The initiative, led by the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC), is aimed at modernising ticket sales and improving transparency in the country’s cinema operations. A development project proposal worth around Tk50 crore is currently being prepared for submission.
BFDC managing director Masuma Rahman Tani said the project gained momentum after receiving support from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which has shown interest in advancing the digital system for cinema ticketing.
She added that senior officials, including Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan and State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury, have expressed backing for the initiative.
According to ministry officials, discussions have already been held on the introduction of a unified system that would integrate cinema halls under a centralised ticketing and revenue structure. Following these meetings, BFDC was asked to prepare the formal development proposal.
Work on the proposal has been ongoing for several weeks, with submission expected ahead of the upcoming festive period.
Masuma Rahman Tani said the project team has been instructed to keep costs controlled while ensuring effective implementation. “We have already held a meeting with the state minister, who emphasised that the project should be implemented at minimal cost. We are committed to ensuring that,” she said.
Stakeholder consultations were also carried out before drafting the proposal. Cinema hall owners, film industry associations, directors, producers and representatives from streaming platforms were included in discussions, with most reportedly supportive of the plan.
Once submitted, the proposal will be reviewed by the ministry before being forwarded to the Planning Commission for approval. If approved, BFDC will begin implementing the system nationwide.
