Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, who was appointed chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in February 2024 on a two-year contract, is set to receive a short extension in his role. Lipu has held the position for the past two years, but he informed the BCB on 5 February that he will not continue for a full extended term.
Under his existing contract, Lipu’s tenure as chief selector is due to end on 28 February. While the BCB had hoped to retain him for a longer period, family commitments mean he is unwilling to commit to an extended term. As a result, the chief selector position is expected to become vacant later this month.
There had been speculation that former national team player Habibul Bashar Sumon could succeed him. Following a BCB board meeting on Sunday, it was decided to offer Lipu a short-term extension of approximately one month to continue in the role.
After this interim period, the task of appointing a new chief selector, as well as assistant selectors, will fall to four BCB directors. Sources told the Daily Times of Bangladesh that former national cricketers currently on the board — president Aminul Islam Bulbul, directors Khaled Masud Pilot and Abdur Razzak, and vice president Faruque Ahmed — will oversee the selection process.
