Bangladesh Cricket Board initiatives to reinstate Shakib Al Hasan in the national team have sparked debate over the limits of administrative authority.
Following a board meeting on 24 January, BCB director and media committee chairman Amzad Hossain confirmed that steps are being taken to bring Shakib back into the squad. Board colleague Asif Akbar also commented on the board’s position regarding the player.
However, Aminul Haque, BNP sports secretary and former captain of the Bangladesh football team, stressed that the cricket board does not have the power to decide Shakib’s return. Speaking to reporters in Dhaka, Aminul said, “This issue being brought up is, frankly, a publicity stunt. The decision on Shakib rests with the state. If the state law declares him innocent or any cases are withdrawn, then he can come back without issue. I want to see a player like Shakib on the field, and I welcome that.”
Aminul added, “Right now, the cricket board is staging a stunt. According to your report, arrangements are already being made to bring him home before even questioning. The cricket board has no authority to return Shakib outside the framework of state law. If Shakib is to return, it must be within the boundaries of the law.”
Shakib last played for Bangladesh in the Kanpur Test during the 2024 India tour.
