Two commercial vessels collided at the Chattogram Outer Anchorage in the Bay of Bengal on Friday, resulting in significant damage. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30pm in the Alpha area of the anchorage.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, confirmed the details on Friday night. He stated that the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker Sea Spike lost control and struck another commercial vessel, the Sunshine, which was at anchor.
The collision caused extensive damage to the Sea Spike, including a rupture in the ship’s side that allowed water to enter the engine room.
Upon receiving notification via the Chittagong Port Authority’s Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS), the Bangladesh Coast Guard immediately launched rescue and assistance efforts under “Operation Suraksha.”
A rescue team was dispatched to the scene involving the Coast Guard ship Sonadia, the tug Pramatta, and a high-speed boat.
To manage any further emergencies, the Coast Guard ship Sonadia remains positioned alongside the damaged vessel, maintaining constant communication and monitoring the situation.
