Bangladesh’s historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin sent shockwaves across the cricketing world. From international media to legends of the game, praise poured in for a team that dared to dream and then turned that dream into history.
But perhaps the most enduring impact of the victory will be felt far beyond the scoreboard. For the young boys and girls picking up a bat or ball in Bangladesh, Darwin could become more than just a famous win. It could become a source of belief, a spark that tells them that the biggest stages are not beyond their reach.
The triumph has given a new generation something precious, a dream backed by belief. For Bangladesh’s senior team, Darwin was a historic victory. For the youngsters watching from academies and age-group camps across the country, it could mean something more, proof that the biggest dreams can become reality.
Young Sylhet batter Mubin Ahmed Dishan is one of them. Having recently represented Bangladesh Under-23 against Malaysia, Dishan believes the victory has only increased his eagerness to push himself further.
The right-hander, who scored a century for Sylhet in last season’s National Cricket League four-day competition, told TIMES of Bangladesh that the victory had given the younger generation fresh motivation.
“This has really increased our excitement and given us more motivation to do well. The victory is very inspiring for us. Our seniors have won in Australia, and we also want to follow in their footsteps, win our series and bring more success for Bangladesh. It makes us dream of achieving something even bigger now,” Dishan said.
Hasan Mahmud, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanzid Hasan Tamim were among the standout performers in the Darwin Test, and their performances left a particular impression on Dishan.
He missed the fourth day of the Test because of Bangladesh Under-23’s One Day match against Malaysia, but later watched the highlights and saw in the victory a blueprint for what Bangladesh’s next generation could achieve.
“Hasan bhai, Miraz bhai, Shanto bhai, Tamim bhai, the way they have performed, all of that fuels our dreams. It shows us that you can perform like this and win matches even against a team as big as Australia,” he said.
For Fahim Muntasir Tanvir, the Darwin Test became the main topic of conversation at the Bangla Track Cricket Academy in Rajshahi, where he trains.
The right-hand batter, who graduated from BKSP in 2023, said the excitement around the victory was palpable among his teammates. “Everyone at the academy has been very excited. We’ve been talking about the win a lot today,” Fahim told TIMES.
The victory has also strengthened his belief that his own ambitions should know no limits.
“I’ve been playing cricket for around 12 years now, and obviously my main target is to play for the national team. I don’t want to limit my dreams. I’ve always wanted to think at the highest level, and that hasn’t changed,” he said.
Fahim, who also hails from Rajshahi, has found another source of inspiration in Shanto. For him, the Test captain’s journey and ability to shut out criticism have made Darwin even more significant.
Shanto has faced heavy criticism and trolling at different stages of his career, but Fahim believes the way he has dealt with the noise and continued to perform offers an important lesson to young cricketers.
“What inspires me the most is the way Shanto bhai has handled everything. Since the beginning of his career, he has faced a lot of criticism and trolling. But he never let that stop him from performing. The way he has controlled all the outside noise, stayed focused and continued to improve himself is really inspiring,” Fahim said.
The inspiration has travelled beyond individual academies too.
Bangladesh Under-19 batter Adrito Ghosh watched the Test with his teammates in Rajshahi, where the junior side are preparing for a bilateral series against Afghanistan.
For Adrito, watching Bangladesh dominate Australia on their own soil offered a glimpse of what the next generation can aspire to.
“Seeing Bangladesh dominate Australia on their home soil is really inspiring. We’re playing Under-19 cricket and will face teams from other countries, so this victory makes us believe that we can also dominate and win against them,” he said.
And his dream goes even further.
“Everyone dreams of playing for the national team and dominating other teams, winning matches for Bangladesh. Personally, my biggest dream is to play for the Bangladesh national team and help them win a World Cup,” Adrito said.
