Karachi-based television channel Geo News has reported that a Bangladeshi-origin man, Saad Muhajir, was among 17 people killed during a security operation by Pakistan’s armed forces in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on 26-27 September.
However, the Pakistan government has not yet formally notified Dhaka about the incident.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain Khan, told TIMES of Bangladesh that he had contacted the Pakistani foreign office but was still awaiting a response.
“Today is a holiday. Hopefully, we will receive some information tomorrow (Monday). It is standard practice to notify the respective government if a foreign national dies,” he said.
According to Geo News, Pakistan’s security forces carried out an intelligence-led operation in Lakki Marwat district, a militant stronghold in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Seventeen members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were reportedly killed in the raid.
Meanwhile, the deceased “Saad Muhajir” was later identified as Faisal Hossain, 21, from Chhoto Dudhkhali village in Madaripur Sadar upazila.
Arman Hossain, Faisal’s elder brother, confirmed the news after seeing pictures of Faisal holding a weapon on social media. He said, “I am certain it is my younger brother Faisal in the photo.”
According to the family, Faisal had left the country in March of last year, claiming he was going to Dubai. While he maintained regular communication with his family, the last time they spoke was before Eid-ul-Adha. After that, there has been no further contact, and the family grew increasingly concerned.
