Young Bangladeshi golfer Sheikh Mohammad Sameer Hossain is setting his sights high as he prepares to represent the nation at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain. The promising amateur golfer, who grew up idolising Rory McIlroy, says his only goal is to bring home a gold medal for Bangladesh.
Sameer, a member of Kurmitola Golf Club, has already made a name for himself in the junior circuit with numerous trophies to his credit. His sharp swing, crisp chipping, and confident putting have often drawn comparisons to McIlroy, the very player who first inspired him to pick up a golf club.
“My only focus right now is the Youth Games,” Sameer told reporters before departing for Bahrain. “I want to raise Bangladesh’s red and green flag high by winning the gold medal. Our team is strong, and we’ve been working extremely hard. For the last two months, I’ve been training from six in the morning until eight at night. Everything I do now revolves around golf.”
Sameer follows in the footsteps of Bangladesh’s golf icon Siddikur Rahman, the two-time Asian Tour champion, and Jamal Hossain Mollah, who has also found success abroad. But Sameer’s ambitions stretch even further. “I don’t just want to win on the Asian Tour,” he said. “I want to compete and win on the PGA Tour and the European Tour one day. I’m preparing myself for that level because I want to see Bangladesh’s flag flying proudly on the world stage.”
When asked about his idol, Sameer’s admiration for Rory McIlroy was clear. “Rory’s swing is incredible, and his driver shots are a joy to watch,” he said. “But what I love most is the way he carries himself as a person. I’ve learned a lot from watching him, and I believe one day I can be a world-class golfer like him.”
For Sameer, golf is not just a sport but it’s his life. He spends hours studying professional players on YouTube, analysing techniques, and improving his skills through self-learning. Having already played in several international junior tournaments, he believes those experiences will help him stay composed in Bahrain.
“The competition will be tough, with the best young golfers from around the world,” he admitted. “But to be the best, you have to play against the best. I’m ready for that challenge. My goal is clear to win gold for Bangladesh.”
Sameer will be joined in Bahrain by fellow amateur golfer Mahmudul Islam Saurav, as Bangladesh aims to make its mark on the continental stage.
