Bangladesh will face Pakistan in a decisive three-match series this month, with the Asian Hockey Federation confirming it as an extension of the Asia Cup that will decide World Cup qualification, Federation General Secretary Lt. Col. Riazul Hasan said on 16 September.

Pakistan were originally scheduled to take part in the Asia Cup but withdrew at the last minute. Their withdrawal opened the door for Bangladesh to compete in the tournament. According to the rules, the champion earns a direct spot in the World Cup, while teams finishing from second to sixth move on to the qualifying round. Having finished sixth, Bangladesh are eligible, but only if they can overcome Pakistan in the upcoming series.

Bangladesh had hoped to host the series in January next year. However, the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has made it clear that there is no time left. If possible, this crucial contest must be staged within this year, even within the ongoing month. On Tuesday, Federation General Secretary Lt. Col. Riazul Hasan told reporters that the three-match series would be considered an extension of the Asia Cup.

Since the series falls under the jurisdiction of an international tournament, it must be organised to meet global standards. This includes meeting requirements for protocol, press facilities, umpiring and official presence, all in line with the standards set by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The Bangladesh Hockey Federation now finds itself under significant pressure to manage both the financial and logistical demands of hosting such a crucial event.

Balancing on-field preparations with economic challenges, Bangladesh hockey faces a difficult path ahead. However, if they hope to keep their World Cup dreams alive, there is no alternative but to beat Pakistan.
