Bangladesh is observing World Environment Day today, 5 June, through various programmes aimed at raising awareness for environmental conservation and addressing the risks of climate change.
This year’s theme has been designated as ‘Climate Change: Today’s Action, Tomorrow’s Security’. Recognised as United Nations’ largest global environmental awareness initiative, the day is currently celebrated in over 150 countries.
Environmentalists have warned that Bangladesh remains one of the most vulnerable nations in the world because of climate change.
Rising sea levels, salinity, river erosion, floods, droughts, and frequent natural disasters are having a severe negative impact on the country’s environment, agriculture, and public life.
Plastic and polythene pollution, air pollution, and unplanned urbanisation are intensifying the environmental crisis.
According to experts, only the collective efforts of individuals, society, and the state can ensure a safe and sustainable future. In a special message shared on social media, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the current government is implementing various effective programmes to ensure environmental conservation, increase climate resilience, and guarantee sustainable development.
He announced several landmark initiatives for next five years, including planting of 250 million trees and excavation or re-excavation of 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country.
Other initiatives include increasing the use of renewable energy, green industrialisation, eco-friendly urbanisation, and improved waste management.
In a separate message, President Mohammed Shahabuddin emphasised that no single institution can tackle the climate and environmental crisis alone.
He noted that a safe and sustainable environment for future generations can only be ensured through the active participation of the public and private sectors, researchers, civil society, and public.
The president called upon everyone to build a green, safe, and sustainable Bangladesh through collective responsibility, effective measures, and widespread public awareness.
The foundation for global environmental protection was established at United Nations Conference on Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972.
Following this, United Nations declared 5 June as World Environment Day, which has been officially observed since 1973.
