Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has said the friendship between Bangladesh and Japan is deeply rooted in mutual trust, common aspirations and progress.
He described Japan as one of Bangladesh’s most trusted development partners, saying bilateral relations have strengthened over the decades on the basis of mutual respect and confidence, according to a handout.
The remarks came at Japan’s National Day reception marking the birthday of the Emperor at the embassy in Dhaka.
“We are firmly committed to further strengthening Bangladesh’s strategic partnership with Japan for shared peace, prosperity and stability,” he said.
He pointed to Bangladesh’s recent democratic transition and national elections, saying the government’s priorities include strengthening institutions, ensuring good governance, restoring economic stability, attracting investment, creating jobs, and ensuring transparency and accountability.
The government has introduced the ‘Family Card’ programme to expand social security coverage and plans to launch an ‘Agricultural Card’ to support farmers, he said.
“We value Japan’s continued cooperation in these areas, including human resource and skill development,” he added.
He said bilateral ties are anchored in strong economic cooperation, noting Japan’s role as the largest bilateral development partner contributing to infrastructure, energy and connectivity projects.
He described the recent Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries as a milestone in advancing relations.
He also appreciated Japan’s continued humanitarian support for displaced Rohingyas, saying constructive engagement is essential for a sustainable solution.
Japan Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and diplomats from various countries attended the event.
