Bangladesh and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have highlighted the need to utilise migration as a climate adaptation strategy to tackle climate-driven displacement and support sustainable development.
Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Nahida Sobhan discussed the nexus between climate change, migration and sustainable development during a meeting with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration in Geneva, according to a message received in Dhaka on Sunday.
During the meeting, the Bangladesh envoy congratulated Amy Pope on the successful completion of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) and the publication of the World Migration Report 2026.
She expressed hope that the forum and the report would help strengthen global efforts to harness migration as a catalyst for sustainable development, particularly for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and climate-vulnerable nations.
The ambassador also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s readiness to contribute to future editions of the World Migration Report and share its experiences in managing migration-related challenges.
The discussions further explored ways in which IOM could enhance support for the well-being and resilience of Rohingyas, officially known as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs), and the host communities in Bangladesh.
Both sides emphasized that as the impacts of climate change continue to intensify, strengthening international cooperation on migration, resilience and the protection of human dignity remains more important than ever.
