Bangladesh has received its first-ever shipment of wheat from the United States, with a consignment of nearly 57,000 metric tonnes (MTs) arriving at Chittagong Port.
The Ministry of Food said in a press release issued on Saturday, the import of wheat marks the beginning of a government-to-government (G2G) agreement signed between Bangladesh and the US under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Under this MoU, Bangladesh will bring in a total of 440,000 MTs of wheat from the US. The inaugural consignment, carrying 56,959 MTs on board the vessel MV NORSE STRIDE, reached the outer anchorage of the country’s principal seaport on Friday.
The Directorate General of Food, under the Ministry of Food, is overseeing the import in accordance with the agreement signed with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Officials have already begun testing wheat samples from the shipment to ensure quality standards. The unloading operation will start once the inspection process is completed.
According to the release, 34,170 MTs of the first batch will be offloaded at Chittagong Port, while the remaining 22,789 MTs will be discharged at Mongla Port.
