Steve Smith has joined Australia’s T20 World Cup squad after Josh Hazlewood pulled out. He may play in the must win match against Sri Lanka on Monday.
Smith reached Sri Lanka last week. The International Cricket Council approved his inclusion to complete Australia’s 15 player squad.
Sean Abbott was called as cover for Hazlewood before the tournament. But he was never officially added to the squad. That left one spot open.
Smith answered an urgent call and flew in after captain Mitchell Marsh got injured during batting practice in Colombo. Marsh missed Australia’s first two matches. He is still unsure for the Kandy game after suffering a painful injury. Because of this, Smith could open the batting.
Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said ICC rules require any squad change to be confirmed at least one day before a match. He said with Smith already in Sri Lanka and doubts over Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, the team decided to activate Smith so he would be ready if needed.
Smith is one of Australia’s most experienced batters. He plays spin well and is in good form. He had scored heavily in the Big Bash League as an opener. Still, he was left out of the original World Cup squad, which caused surprise.
All rounder Marcus Stoinis said Smith is always ready. He called him a complete professional and said he would be prepared if selected.
Australia are already missing injured fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Tim David has only recently returned after a hamstring injury in December. Stoinis also hurt his hand while fielding in the shock loss to Zimbabwe. That defeat pushed Australia close to elimination.
If Australia lose to Sri Lanka, it will be their second loss in Group B. Then a Zimbabwe win against Ireland on Tuesday or Sri Lanka on Thursday would knock the 2021 champions out.
Stoinis said his hand is improving. He said scans showed no fracture. He added that it is only bruised and feels much better than he first feared.
