Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end at the group stage after a combination of defeats and washed-out matches left them unable to progress.
Their Super Eights hopes were first put under pressure following a defeat to Zimbabwe and worsened by the loss to Sri Lanka on 16 February 2026. Today, the Zimbabwe–Ireland clash in Pallekele was abandoned due to persistent rain, confirming Australia’s exit from the tournament. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe secured a Super Eights spot, earning one point from the abandoned encounter.
Zimbabwe had been scheduled to face Ireland in what was set to be the final Group B match. Rain began before the start, causing repeated delays. Each pause was followed by further showers, leaving the pitch unplayable. After nearly three hours of waiting, match officials officially abandoned the game. Under tournament rules, both teams were awarded one point each. With a total of five points, Zimbabwe confirmed their progression to the Super Eights, despite still having one match left to play.
Sri Lanka have also secured a place in the Super Eights from Group B. They won all three of their matches, accumulating six points with one game still remaining.
Ireland sit third in the group with one win and two defeats from three matches, giving them three points. Australia, meanwhile, finished fourth with just one win and two losses from three matches, leaving them on two points. Oman occupy the bottom of the group, having played three games without a victory.
