The Gono Odhikar Parishad has called for an all-party solidarity rally to be held on Friday, demanding justice for the recent attack on its President Nurul Haque Nur and other party activists, according to a press release.
The rally will also press for the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and a ban on the politics of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance, which the party accuses of aiding fascism.
The rally is scheduled to be held on Friday at 3pm at Shahbagh.
Gono Odhikar Parishad has urged its members, supporters, and pro-democracy citizens to attend the rally and join in a united stand against political violence.
According to the release, on August 29, Nurul Haque Nur was holding a press conference in front of the party’s central office at Al Razi Complex when he and his fellow activists came under a “brutal attack.” The attackers also stormed the office and vandalised furniture. Over a hundred activists were injured, many of them seriously.
Although the government initially promised justice, the party expressed concern over the lack of visible action, despite video footage clearly identifying the attackers.
The statement further said Nur was a frontline leader during the July Mass Uprising, and the attack on him signals a resurgence of fascist forces. Gono Odhikar Parishad views the incident not just as an attack on one party, but as a broader assault on the democratic rights of the nation.
The party also alleged that pro-Awami League affiliate groups and the Jatiya Party were involved in orchestrating the attack as part of a wider conspiracy to destabilize the country’s emerging political landscape.
