Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged athletes to stay away from political parties during their playing careers. He said, “Professional athletes do not represent any party or group. They represent the country through their sporting excellence.”

He made the remarks on Monday at a program held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The event marked the launch of a sports allowance scheme. Sports cards and awards were also given to athletes who won medals in international events.

He said sports is now a profession, not just a hobby. He recalled that the BNP had promised this in its 2026 election manifesto. He said the work has now started.

The Prime Minister said the government is introducing a salary structure for athletes. A sports allowance has also been launched. He said this will reduce financial stress. Athletes will be able to focus on their sport.
