A Dhaka court has granted bail to three members of the Swechhasebak Dal in connection with the alleged assault on former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.
The accused include Md Hanif, member secretary of Uttara West thana unit Swechhasebak Dal, Mohammad Kaiyum, joint convener of the Uttara East thana unit, and Mozammel Haque Dhali, an activist.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah approved their bail petitions on Wednesday.
Defense lawyer Sayed Nazrul Islam confirmed that Kaiyum and Mozammel surrendered before the court on Wednesday and sought bail.
After hearing of both sides, the court accepted their bail petitions.
Meanwhile, police arrested another suspect, Hanif, on Tuesday in Dhaka. He was sent to jail the same day after appearing before the court.
On June 22, a group—reportedly consisting mostly of local members of Swechhasebak Dal —gathered outside Huda’s Uttara residence and allegedly assaulted him.
Police later detained Huda and took him into custody. A video of the assault has since gone viral on social media.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Uttara West Police Station against six named Swechhasebak Dal members and 15 to 20 unidentified individuals.
