A pall of grief hangs over Guwahati as Assam mourns the sudden death of beloved singer Zubin Garg. The 52-year-old artist died on 19 September while scuba diving in Singapore, leaving fans and admirers across India in shock. Thousands have since gathered on the streets to pay their respects, struggling to accept the loss of a cultural icon.
But questions over the circumstances of his death continue to mount. Viral footage of Garg’s dive has fueled speculation online, with many demanding a second post-mortem to clarify how the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, the singer had long feared water, raising doubts about why he went scuba diving and whether proper safety measures were in place.
The Assam government has now confirmed that a second autopsy will be conducted today. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while initially opposed, said the move was necessary given the growing public outcry.
“People want answers. To avoid any political controversy and in respect of public sentiment, we decided on a second autopsy, with the family’s consent,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, an FIR was lodged against Garg’s manager, who had accompanied him to Singapore, though his wife has since requested its withdrawal.
Authorities say the final decision on Garg’s last rites will be made after the post-mortem, with his body preserved until then.
