The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Friday, with 7.21 lakh people affected across 11 districts, according to the latest report from the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS), Assam.
The affected districts include Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai and Kamrup (Metro). Around 900 villages have been affected by rising floodwaters, reports NDTV.
Sivasagar is the worst hit district, with 3,92,195 people affected, followed by Charaideo with 1,10,755, Jorhat with 97,690 and Dibrugarh with 13,390 affected people. The floods have also caused major agricultural damage, submerging 24,897.27 hectares of cropland across the state.
Six people have died in the last 24 hours due to the floods. The disaster has also affected 1,38,965 livestock, with 540 animals, including 500 poultry birds, reported washed away.
Five major rivers are currently flowing above danger levels, including the Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh and Kushiyara at Sribhumi. The Disang River at Nanglamuraghat is flowing above its Highest Flood Level (HFL).
To tackle the crisis, authorities have established 487 relief camps and distribution centres, including 106 relief camps and 381 distribution centres.
Currently, 24,418 people are staying in relief camps, while 2,90,826 people are receiving assistance through distribution centres.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing with 111 medical teams, 56 boats and one Indian Air Force helicopter. So far, 8,409 people and 35 animals have been rescued.
