National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan visited injured journalist Imran Hossain of “Amar Desh” newspaper at the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, more than a month after the journalist was injured in a road accident in Gazipur.
Speaking to journalists while leaving the hospital, the NCP spokesperson said he had come to check on Imran’s overall condition and spoke with his family members.
“NCP has always spoken about press freedom. We have raised issues from the journalists’ wage board and pay structure to housing to ensure journalists’ welfare,” he said.
Responding to a question about the cancellation of NCP joint convener Nusrat Tabassum’s nomination after the suspension of Monira Sharmin’s candidacy for a reserved women’s seat, Asif Mahmud said a legal complication had arisen, prompting the party to decide on an alternative candidate.
“The nomination has just been cancelled, but there are options for appeal and writ. I hope it will be resolved. Our legal team is working on the matter,” he said.
He recalled that in the national election, foreign citizens and loan defaulters had participated, with the Election Commission helplessly claiming a stone had been pressed on their chest.
“This is not a complicated issue like loan default or foreign citizenship. We are respectful of the law and the rules. Whatever decision the Election Commission gives according to the final law, we will accept it,” he added.
Regarding recent clashes between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir in Chattogram, the NCP spokesperson called for peaceful coexistence on all campuses.
“Student politics should become competitive politics based on merit. There is a cold war-like situation between student organisations of the two major political parties on various campuses. Student organisations should not take this cold war to the level of violence,” he said.
