Arsenal sent a strong message in the Premier League title race with a dominant 3-0 win over Fulham at the Emirates on Saturday.
The victory moved Mikel Arteta’s side six points clear at the top and increased the pressure on Manchester City, who now must win their two games in hand to stay in control.
Viktor Gyokeres starred for Arsenal with two first-half goals, while Bukayo Saka also found the net in a powerful display.
Arsenal started fast and took the lead in the ninth minute when Gyokeres tapped in from Saka’s low cross.
Saka then added the second before halftime with a sharp finish that beat former Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno at the near post.
Gyokeres struck again in stoppage time of the first half with a header to complete a ruthless opening 45 minutes.
Arsenal eased off after the break as they looked ahead to Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid.
“We showed a lot of authority, determination and composure. We brought a lot of energy to the stadium,” said manager Mikel Arteta. “It was a great performance.”
After seeing their lead disappear in recent weeks, Arsenal have now responded with back-to-back wins to revive their dream of a first league title since 2004.
Elsewhere, West Ham’s fight for survival suffered a major setback after a crushing 3-0 defeat at Brentford.
An early own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos put Brentford ahead before Thiago scored from the penalty spot for his 22nd league goal of the season.
Mikkel Damsgaard sealed the result as Brentford boosted their European hopes.
West Ham hit the woodwork three times but stayed 17th, only two points above the relegation zone.
Newcastle United ended their poor run with a 3-1 home win over Brighton.
“It’s been a horrible feeling for us for a number of weeks. We have been looking to change our fortunes,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
Sunderland also drew 1-1 at Wolves in a tense match that saw Dan Ballard sent off in the 24th minute.
