ApexTannery has decided to establish an in-house effluent treatment plant (ETP) at its tannery premises as part of efforts to strengthen environmental compliance and sustainability standards.
The decision was approved by the company’s board of directors at a meeting held on Tuesday, the company said in a regulatory filing with the Dhaka Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
Under the plan, ApexTannery will set up an ETP along with a chrome recovery plant and a sewerage treatment plant, covering an estimated area of 12,000 to 15,000 square feet, with an approximate investment of Tk12 crore.
According to the disclosure, the facility will treat effluents generated from operations spanning wet blue to finished leather stages, aiming to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, meet international buyer standards, and support the company’s long-term sustainability objectives.
The company did not disclose the timeline for completion of the project.
Industry insiders say many tanneries have struggled to secure global certifications and better export prices due to limitations of the central effluent treatment plant at the Savar tannery estate, prompting several companies to explore in-house treatment solutions.
