Amit Hasan, once one of the most popular leading actors in Dhallywood, enjoyed a successful run on the big screen from the 1990s.
He won the affection of audiences as a leading man and later maintained his position by taking on a range of other roles.
His appearances in films have declined over time, however. He now works selectively and lives in the United States.
Amit Hasan recently made an appearance at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).
During his first visit to the organisation in a long time, he spoke openly to journalists about his personal life, religious practices and acting career.
The actor said he sees religion and profession as two separate aspects of life. He does not believe that practising his religion requires him to give up acting.
Instead, he wants to continue his profession honestly while fulfilling his religious responsibilities.
“Religion is personal,” Amit Hasan said. “It is not that I will stop practising my religion because I act in films, nor will I give up films because I practise my religion. Perhaps it varies from person to person. Everyone can have their own personal views. But for me, my religious practices are personal.”
Calling acting an important part of his life, he said, “BFDC and acting are my work. People know me as Amit Hasan today because of my work. I have received people’s love through this profession.
My family has also been supported through this profession.”
Amit Hasan said he would continue acting while carrying out his religious duties.
“I will certainly call upon Allah, offer my five daily prayers, observe fasting and perform Hajj. These are my religious responsibilities. At the same time, I will continue acting because people know me through my acting,” he said.
The actor said he views religion and work separately.
“My personal opinion is that religion is one thing and work is another. I try to fulfil both in their respective places. Allah exists, and I have always tried to work honestly. At the same time, I have tried to practise my religion.”
Amit Hasan said he leaves the judgement of his professional and religious life to the Creator rather than to others.
“Only Allah knows how much I have been able to achieve and how much I have not. I have tried my best from my own position. I have tried to remain honest in my work and fulfil my responsibilities in practising my religion,” he said.
