Mufti Amir Hamza, Jamaat‑e‑Islami lawmaker from Kushtia‑3 (Sadar) constituency, has been granted anticipatory bail by the High Court in a defamation case.
He filed a petition for bail following an arrest warrant issued against him by a court. Hamza appeared in person before the court to submit his petition on Monday.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher approved his bail petition after a hearing.
Court sources said the judges granted him eight weeks’ anticipatory bail.
The warrant was issued on 21 April in the defamation case filed over remarks against State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.
The case was filed on 2 April seeking Tk100 crore against him for allegedly calling BNP leader Tuku an “atheist” and “anti-Islamic.”
Lawyer Nazmul said these remarks have caused a defamation of Tk100 crore to the reputation of the BNP leader. The case was filed under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
