A Sirajganj court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Kushtia‑3 lawmaker Mufti Amir Hamza in connection with a defamation case.
Sirajganj’s Chauhali Cognisance Court Judge Suman Karmakar issued the arrest warrant around 11am.
Humayun Kabir, additional public prosecutor and general secretary of the Sirajganj District Bar Association, confirmed the development.
Earlier on 2 April, the judge summoned Jamaat-e-Islami MP Amir Hamza to appear on Tuesday (21 April). As he failed to comply, the court ordered the warrant against him.
The case was filed on 2 April seeking Tk100 crore against him for allegedly calling BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku an “atheist” and “anti-Islamic.”
According to the plaintiff, the legal action follows a speech by the Jamaat leader in which he publicly labelled Tuku, a member of the BNP National Standing Committee and former minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, as an atheist.
Lawyer Nazmul said, these remarks have caused a defamation of Tk100 crore to the reputation of the BNP leader. The case was filed under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
