The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) inaugurated a state-of-the-art AI Supercomputing Lab at its permanent campus on Sunday, deploying NVIDIA DGX Spark systems capable of delivering up to one petaflop of artificial intelligence performance in a push to anchor locally relevant AI research, the university said in a press release.
The lab was officially opened by Nadia Anwar, Founder Member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Hasanul A Hasan, Founder Member of the Board of Trustees; Ishtiaque Abedin, Founder Member of the Board of Trustees; and Carmen Z Lamagna, Former Vice Chancellor and Member of the Board of Trustees. Vice-Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam and Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Md Abdur Rahman were also present, alongside deans, directors, department heads, faculty members, and senior officials of the university.
The facility enables researchers and students to work with large-scale AI models, including large language models and diffusion systems, fostering hands-on innovation in AI engineering. A central pillar of the initiative is the development of “Sovereign AI” tailored to the Bengali language and local context — an effort the university said would ensure culturally relevant technological advancement. The lab will also support research in healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, and the textile industry.
Founder Member Hasanul A Hasan said artificial intelligence is playing a highly significant role across multiple fields in the present era and would open new horizons of opportunity in education and research at AIUB. The university said the initiative aims to strengthen Bangladesh’s AI research ecosystem, promote ethical AI development, and empower future innovators with world-class computational resources.
