She has no childhood, no physical body and no life experience of her own. Yet Tilly Norwood has landed the lead role in a feature film, becoming one of the first AI-generated performers to headline a major narrative project.
London-based AI studio Particle 6 has cast its virtual actor in Misaligned, an AI-themed coming-of-age comedy-drama that blends traditional filmmaking with artificial intelligence, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Described as a “hybrid production”, the project combines experienced film and television professionals with AI specialists.
Norwood, unveiled by Particle 6 last year, is an entirely AI-generated digital performer created inside the company’s fictional “Tillyverse”. She was developed by Eline van der Velden, founder and chief executive of Particle 6, whose team of more than 30 people has been retrained to combine filmmaking with AI production.
Set in the surreal “Tillyverse”, Misaligned follows Tilly, an AI being with no body, childhood or personal memories who begins developing emotions, ambitions and desires after encountering a rogue bot from the dark web. As she becomes increasingly human, she starts questioning her own identity and existence. The project remains in early development, with no director, release date, supporting cast or distribution platform announced.
Van der Velden said Misaligned demonstrates that AI can support premium storytelling only when guided by experienced filmmakers, stressing that artificial intelligence still depends on human creativity, judgement and storytelling instinct.
The announcement has reignited debate across Hollywood, where AI-generated performers remain deeply controversial. Actors’ union SAG-AFTRA insists Norwood is “not an actor” but a computer-generated character trained on the work of human performers, warning that AI actors threaten jobs, performers’ rights and artistic value. The union also cautioned studios that using AI performers could conflict with protections secured after the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Actor and filmmaker Natasha Lyonne has called for a boycott of any talent agency representing Norwood.
Van der Velden rejected the criticism, saying Tilly is not intended to replace actors but should be viewed as a new artistic medium alongside traditional filmmaking.
With Misaligned, Tilly Norwood has moved beyond an AI experiment. Whether audiences embrace cinema’s newest virtual star or see her as the start of a new era, the debate over AI’s future in filmmaking has only grown louder.
