The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has publicly backed FIFA president Gianni Infantino, praising his leadership while welcoming the governing body’s decision to abandon its controversial commercial rights investment plan.
In a statement published on its official social media channels, the AFA expressed support for Infantino’s decade in charge of FIFA, highlighting football development and institutional governance as the defining achievements of his presidency.
“On behalf of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and its Executive Committee, we express our support for the work carried out over the past 10 years, whose main pillars have been the development of football worldwide and institutional strength based on a clear, stable, and transparent governance model,” the statement said.
The endorsement comes after FIFA withdrew its proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise project, which would have involved selling a minority stake in a new commercial rights company to private investors. The proposal sparked widespread criticism from football stakeholders before being abandoned last week.
The AFA welcomed FIFA’s decision to reverse course and acknowledged the governing body’s admission that mistakes had been made.
It described the withdrawal of “a project that generated more uncertainty than certainty” as an important step, adding that recognising those mistakes would help strengthen trust across world football.
“Prioritising governance standards is a fundamental pillar for strengthening good relations between FIFA, its member associations and the confederations,” the statement added.
The Argentine federation also credited Infantino with opening FIFA to greater cooperation between member associations through what it described as transparent leadership and direct dialogue.
It concluded by reaffirming its commitment to continue working alongside Infantino “to develop better and even more inclusive football.”
