Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Lakshmipur-3 (Sadar) parliamentary candidate Rezaul Karim has accused the administration of failing to ensure a level playing field ahead of the national election.
He said the political environment deteriorated immediately after the election schedule was announced at a press conference at Lakshmipur Press Club on Friday.
He cited the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, who was also an MP candidate, as an example of the hostile climate.
“The incidents across the country and those in Lakshmipur make it clear that the administration has failed to ensure a level playing field,” Rezaul said.
“Those responsible for such attacks must be asked whether they want a free and fair election.”
The press conference was organised in protest against an alleged attack on Jamaat activists by BNP supporters on Thursday afternoon in Ward 7 of Charshahi Union in Sadar upazila.
Rezaul criticised what he described as one-sided conduct by local officials.
“When one side goes to file a case, officials say the other side will file case as well and ask us to settle it among ourselves. Such statements are unacceptable,” he added.
Jamaat’s Lakshmipur district secretary AR Hafiz Ullah read a written statement at the briefing.
Momin Ullah Patwary, President of the District Labour Welfare Federation, Abul Farah Nishan, Lakshmipur city Jamaat Ameer, and Rezaul Islam Khan Sumon, Chandraganj thana Jamaat secretary were also present at the press brifing.
