Veteran actress Ranjita was injured in a snatching incident in Dhaka on Sunday night after attackers allegedly tore away one of her earrings, leaving her ear badly injured.
The incident took place around 9:30 pm near Rampura Bazar while the actor was returning home from the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, commonly known as BFDC.
According to the actor, she had visited BFDC to attend activities surrounding the Film Artistes’ Association election, which she described as a festive occasion for artistes.
In a video message, Ranjita said she realised someone was following her on the way home and became frightened moments before the attack.
“Before I could understand what was happening, they pulled at my earring,” she said. “Then I saw blood and realised my ear had been torn.”
She was reportedly left traumatised after the incident and was later taken to hospital with the help of people nearby. Doctors treated her injuries with seven stitches to her ear.
The actor is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Rampura. Sources said doctors are keeping her under observation because she suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure.
Ranjita made her big-screen debut in the late 1980s through the film ‘Dhaka 86’, directed by legendary actor and filmmaker Razzak. She later appeared in around 30 films, including ‘Raja Mistry’ and ‘Jinner Badsha’. She has not appeared in cinema since 2005.
The actor currently lives in the Banasree area of Dhaka with her physically disabled brother and her only child.
