Popular South Indian actor and politician Thalapathy Vijay, who has been in the spotlight following the Karur stampede that claimed over 40 lives, faced a new scare on Thursday after the Chennai Police received a bomb threat targeting his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, reports mid-day.
According to police sources, the threatening call was made from Kanyakumari to the emergency helpline 100. The caller reportedly warned that a bomb would be planted at Vijay’s home if he held any future public meetings.
The incident comes just days after the devastating stampede during a political rally led by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur on September 27, where 41 people died and at least 60 were injured. Authorities said the tragedy occurred when over 30,000 people gathered at a venue designed for about 10,000, violating security guidelines and lacking sufficient arrangements for food and water.
This is the second bomb threat the actor has received since the Karur incident. The first threat call was reported on September 29, prompting heightened security around his residence.
Following the latest threat, police have tightened security at Vijay’s Neelankarai home and have launched an investigation to trace the caller’s identity and location.
In the aftermath of the Karur tragedy, Vijay announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 2 lakh for the injured. His planned statewide political tour was also suspended.
On the night of the incident, the actor issued a heartfelt statement expressing his grief:
“My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”
He later released a video message sharing his anguish and hinting at possible political sabotage behind the tragic event.
