At least 21 people have died and 30 others remain missing after a massive landslide swept through Kenya’s western Rift Valley on Saturday following days of heavy rain.

The landslide struck Chesongoch in Elgeyo Marakwet County, destroying more than 1,000 homes and blocking several roads. Authorities said 30 severely injured victims were airlifted to a hospital in Eldoret City, reports UNB/AP.

Rescue teams continued to dig through the mud and debris despite persistent rainfall, while Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said the government is relocating survivors to safer areas.

Chesongoch, known for its steep slopes, has suffered repeated disasters, including fatal landslides in 2010 and 2012 and flash floods in 2020.
