The 6th National Women’s Baseball Championship 2025 got underway on Thursday with a colourful opening ceremony at the Riya Gope Women’s Sports Complex in Dhaka. The three-day event, organised by the Bangladesh Baseball-Softball Association (BBSA), features twelve teams representing six districts, four clubs, and two service teams.

The ceremony was graced by Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Honourable Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce, Textiles and Jute, who attended as the chief guest. The event was presided over by Md. Afzalur Rahman, President of BBSA. Among other distinguished guests were Kazi Md. Fazlul Karim, Additional IGP (Admin) of Bangladesh Police Headquarters; Mirza Sifat-e-Khoda, Sports Director of Bangladesh Ansar & VDP and Chairman of the Tournament Committee; Dr. Anupam Hossain, Senior Vice President of the Federation; Talha Yubaer, General Secretary; and Imam Hossain Sohag, Joint Secretary, along with other federation officials.

In his inaugural speech, Sheikh Bashir Ahmed said, “Baseball is steadily gaining popularity in Bangladesh. I believe the sport will soon expand nationwide and bring success for Bangladesh on the international stage.”

During the ceremony, the BBSA proposed to appoint Sheikh Bashir Ahmed as the Chief Patron of the Bangladesh Baseball-Softball Federation, a role he accepted with enthusiasm. He pledged his full support for the sport’s growth, expressing his commitment to helping strengthen and enrich the national team in the coming years.

The opening day saw some exciting on-field action. Sand Angels Club outclassed Joypurhat District Team by 17–4 runs, while Savar Community Club thrashed Chandpur District Team 19–0 to start their campaign in style. The Players of the Match, Umme Habiba Sathi (Sand Angels) and Rima Akter (Savar), each received a cash prize of Tk 1,000.

In the second phase of matches, Kushtia District defeated Narayanganj District 11–1, with Eni earning the best player award. Meanwhile, Joypurhat Baseball Club beat Sylhet District 10–3, with Marufa Rahat named Player of the Match.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals are set for Friday (31 October), while the final and third-place match will be held on Saturday (1 November) at the same venue.
