Renowned actress, director and cultural personality Meher Afroz Shaon has lost her mother, Begum Tahura Ali, who passed away early Thursday morning at United Hospital in Dhaka after a prolonged illness. She was 72.
Shaon shared the heartbreaking news on social media, writing, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return. With a heavy heart, I share that my beloved mother, Begum Tahura Ali, has passed away. May Allah forgive her, grant her Jannatul Ferdous, and give us all the strength and patience to bear this loss.”
According to Shaon’s post, the first Namaz-e-Janaza of Begum Tahura Ali will be held after Asr prayers at Gulshan Azad Mosque, followed by the second Janaza after Maghrib at Tejgaon Rahim Metal Central Mosque. Shaon also requested everyone to pray for her mother’s departed soul.
Born in Feni, Begum Tahura Ali completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemistry from Chittagong University. She later joined Habibullah Bahar College as a lecturer.
Beyond her career in education, Begum Tahura Ali was also active in politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for two terms: from 1996 to 2001, and again from 2009 to 2014, representing the Feni and Jamalpur-Sherpur constituencies. She also served as the Chairman of Citizen Marketing Limited.
