At least 18 workers are missing and presumed dead after a massive explosion tore through a munitions plant in rural Tennessee, United States on Friday, leaving behind nothing but smoldering debris and grief-stricken families.
The explosion ripped apart the Accurate Energetic Systems (AES) facility, located about 100km west of Nashville, shaking nearby communities and sending a column of smoke visible for miles.
Local authorities confirmed multiple fatalities, but the exact number of victims was yet to be determined as rescue efforts continued late into the night.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the site as “one of the most devastating scenes” he has encountered in his career.
“There’s nothing left to describe. The building is completely gone,” Davis told reporters during a late-night briefing.
He added that FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were working alongside local officials.
Footage aired on local television showed raging flames and thick plumes of smoke rising from heaps of twisted metal and concrete. Residents’ miles away said they felt the ground shake and heard a thunderous boom that shattered windows in nearby homes.
Accurate Energetic Systems, which produces and stores explosives for defense, aerospace, and commercial demolition industries, occupies a sprawling 1,300-acre complex in Bucksnort, Tennessee.
The company has eight production buildings and a quality control lab, is known locally for providing relatively high-wage jobs around $19 an hour in a region where the state minimum wage is $7.25.
In a brief statement, AES said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic incident” and extended condolences to the families and community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. We are grateful to the first responders for their bravery and swift action,” the statement read.
Authorities said recovery operations would continue through the weekend, with federal and local agencies.
