A Union Parishad (UP) member was allegedly beaten to death in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh on Sunday night.
The victim, Jamal Uddin, 60, was a member of Ward-8 in Banihala Union under the upazila.
According to police and the victim’s family, Jamal Uddin had gone to deliver dinner to his daughter, a student at the local Nalchapra Madrasa, as he did every evening. On his way back home, he was attacked and severely beaten by a group of unidentified assailants in Nalchapra village.
Locals rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, police arrested two suspects Kashem Uddin, 55, and Anwar Hossain, 45, both residents of Nalchapra village, on suspicion of involvement in the killing.
Tarakanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tipu Sultan said that Jamal Uddin had a longstanding land dispute with some neighbours, which may have been the motive behind the attack.
“We are investigating the incident and will be able to confirm the details after further inquiry,” he said.
