Protests have erupted worldwide in response to Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission carrying aid to Gaza.
Demonstrators have rallied across Europe, Australia, South America, and beyond, calling for stronger sanctions against Israel and condemning its ongoing blockade of Gaza, reports Al Jazeera.
The flotilla, which included 41 ships and over 400 people, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and various political figures, was intercepted by the Israeli Navy on its way to Gaza, where the UN reports a severe humanitarian crisis and famine due to Israel’s prolonged military operations.
In Barcelona, Spain, around 15,000 protesters gathered to express their anger. The protests turned violent, with demonstrators smashing windows and spray-painting anti-Israel slogans on businesses like Starbucks, Burger King, and Carrefour. Protesters accused these corporations of being complicit in Israel’s military actions, reports Reuters.

Photo: ReutersChants of “Gaza, you are not alone,” “Boycott Israel,” and “Freedom for Palestine” filled the streets. Riot police clashed with demonstrators as they tried to breach barricades. Among those intercepted by Israeli forces was former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, who now faces deportation.
Protests also took place in Dublin, Ireland, where solidarity with Palestine is often linked to the nation’s own history of resistance to British colonialism. Miriam McNally, whose daughter joined the flotilla, expressed her pride and concern, telling news agency, “I am worried sick for my daughter, but I am so proud of her and of what she’s doing. She is standing up for humanity in the face of grave danger.”
Paris saw approximately 1,000 demonstrators gather at Place de la République, while in Marseille, about 100 protesters were arrested for trying to block access to Eurolinks, a company accused of supplying military components to Israel.
In Italy, unions have called for a general strike on Friday in support of the flotilla, and large crowds gathered across major cities. In Rome alone, 10,000 people marched, chanting “We are prepared to block everything. The genocidal machine must stop immediately.”
Protests also occurred in other cities worldwide, including Berlin, The Hague, Tunis, Brasilia, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and Istanbul. Demonstrators marched to the Israeli embassy in Istanbul, calling for a “total embargo on the occupation.” In Brussels, around 3,000 people gathered outside the European Parliament, urging the EU to lift the Gaza blockade, as smoke bombs and firecrackers lit up the streets.
In the Middle East, solidarity protests were held in Tripoli, Libya, and Caracas, Venezuela, where demonstrators condemned Israel’s interception of the flotilla. In Malaysia, activists gathered outside the US embassy to protest the detention of at least 12 Malaysian nationals aboard the flotilla.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, supporters of Palestine marched in solidarity, waving Palestinian flags and condemning Israel’s actions. The protests, which have continued throughout the week, reflect growing global outrage over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
As the flotilla’s activists face deportation, the international solidarity movement is only gaining momentum, demanding an end to the blockade and greater global pressure on Israel to halt its military actions in Gaza.
