The seven-day “Complete Shutdown” programme at Rajshahi University has been suspended by teachers, officers, and staff, who had been demanding reinstatement of the ward quota, and tough action against those involved in harassment of teachers.
The protesters made the announcement on Wednesday, after resuming their programme for the third day in the morning.
On 13 September, students at the university had locked in Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Main Uddin, Registrar Dr Iftikharul Alam Masud, Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman, and Public Relations Administrator Professor Akhtar Hossain Majumdar over the ward quota issue.
During the scuffle, several teachers and students, including the pro-VC and deputy registrar, were injured. Teachers and staff have called for exemplary punishment for those involved in the incident.
Following the scuffle on 13 September, the university administration announced the suspension of ward quota admissions around 1 am the next day. The Syndicate later decided to uphold this decision. In protest, the Officers Association declared a “Complete Shutdown” programme.
Amid the unrest, the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) election was postponed. The polls, originally scheduled for 25 September, will now be held on 16 October.
