An incident of idol vandalism has occurred in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah. Police have arrested a person named Manjer Ali after reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday at the Fulhari Haritala Public Puja Temple in Shailkupa.
CCTV footage shows Manjer Ali entering the temple, breaking the heads of the idols one by one, removing them, and submerging them in water.
Regarding this matter, the temple committee president, Bikash Kumar Bishwas, said, “Our people were guarding here until 4am. Manger Ali did this after that. He broke the heads of six idols, including Asura, Kartik, and Saraswati. We came at 9am and saw that the idols had been vandalised.”
The committee’s general secretary, Taposh Biswas, stated, “Manjer Ali is somewhat mentally challenged. I’ve heard he goes wherever pujas are held. He also comes to our temple. He eats here. Now, whether this vandalism is an expression of his mental instability or if there is a conspiracy behind it, I urge law enforcement to investigate this thoroughly.”
Regarding the matter, OC Masum Khan of Sailkupa Police Station said, “We have arrested the accused after reviewing the CCTV footage. Inquiries in the area indicate he is mentally challenged. However, the matter will be investigated, and further action will be taken.”
