Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has not been included in the squad for their Champions League clash against Newcastle United on Thursday, as he continues to recover from a groin injury.
The 18-year-old missed Sunday’s 6–0 La Liga victory over Valencia, with manager Hansi Flick previously voicing concern over Yamal’s workload during the recent international break. The youngster played 79 minutes in Spain’s 3–0 win over Bulgaria on 4 September, followed by 73 minutes in a 6–0 victory over Turkey three days later.
Barcelona have opted to leave Yamal out of the travelling squad for their opening Champions League group match at St James’ Park as a precaution.
Spain left-back Alejandro Balde (hamstring) and midfielder Gavi (knee) also remain sidelined through injury. However, Frenkie de Jong, who missed the Valencia fixture after returning from international duty with the Netherlands, is available for the European tie.
Barcelona head into the match as reigning La Liga champions, having reached the Champions League semi-finals last season before being eliminated by Inter Milan.
