Three people, including a police officer, were killed after a bus rammed into a stationary bamboo-laden truck on the Narail-Jashore highway in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore on Sunday night.
The accident occurred near Bhangurha Bazar around 10:45 pm, according to Highway Police. The deceased were identified as Nikkon Addhya, sub-inspector(SI) of Lahuria Investigation Centre under Lohagara Police Station in Narail; Akhtar Hossain from Basundia in Jashore Sadar; and Abu Jafar from Vekutia in Jashore suburb, a former assistant general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Central Committee of the Volunteer Team.
Police said a Narail Express bus travelling from Dhaka lost control and hit the parked truck from behind. The impact caused the bus’s front glass to shatter as bamboo logs pierced through its body. Passenger Akhtar Hossain died at the scene.
Rescuers rushed Abu Jafar and SI Nikkon Addhya to Jashore General Hospital in critical condition. Doctors declared Abu Jafar dead on arrival. SI Nikkon was later transferred towards Dhaka for advanced treatment but was diverted to Narail Sadar Hospital when his condition worsened, where he was pronounced dead.
“Three people have been killed after the bus crashed into the stationary truck. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident,” said Sheikh Sekandar Ali, officer-in-charge of Tularampur Highway Police Station.
