Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Sunday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Badruddin Umar, a politician, sociologist, writer, progressive thinker, and one of the foremost leaders of the people’s democratic struggle.
In a condolence message, Yunus remembered Umar, who began his academic career at Dhaka University before joining Rajshahi University, as “a shining beacon of free thought and progress.”
He highlighted Umar’s active role in the Language Movement, his research, protests against colonial mindsets, and lifelong dedication to socialist ideals, which greatly enriched the nation’s intellectual heritage, reports BSS.
Recalling Umar’s bold support for popular uprisings against autocracy, Yunus said that as president of the Jatiya Mukti Council, he was “not just a theoretician, but a fighter who consistently raised his voice against injustice.” He also noted that the government had nominated Umar for the Swadhinata Award in recognition of his outstanding national contributions.
Terming his death an irreparable loss, CA Yunus said Umar’s writings and philosophy would continue to guide future generations of thinkers. He conveyed his sympathy to Umar’s family, colleagues, and admirers.
Badruddin Umar, 94, had long suffered from age-related complications and passed away Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital.
