BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has warned that the recent vandalism of shrines and political party offices cannot be considered isolated incidents, cautioning that similar events may intensify as the national elections approach.

Abbas also claimed that the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur was premeditated, accusing the government of negligence for failing to arrange his treatment abroad. Abbas made these remarks after visiting Nur at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday, where he spoke with doctors and family members.

“The assault on Nur was clearly intentional. He is still bleeding from his nose. The motive, the individuals behind it, and their objectives must be thoroughly investigated, and justice must be served. He should be immediately flown abroad for advanced treatment,” said Mirza Abbas.

He expressed hope that Nur would recover fully and return to the political arena.

On August 29, clashes between Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad activists broke out in Bijoynagar under Ramna, leaving several people injured, including Nur and Gono Odhikar Parishad’s General Secretary Rashed Khan. Nur, critically injured, was admitted to the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Abbas warned that failure to identify the perpetrators would indicate that the government had lost control over its “command.”

Commenting on the recent shrine attack in Rajbari, Abbas stated, “These incidents are not isolated. As the election draws near, more such events will unfold. This is a deliberate attempt to derail the polls. A section of people is determined to prevent the election from taking place in February.”

“The country is not functioning normally. There is instability everywhere, and the system of governance is on the brink of collapse,” he added.
